Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is located in South Asia, known for its tea and cinnamon industries. Gaining independence from the British in 1948 after over 130 years of resource exploitation, environmental degradation and indigenous erasure, Sri Lanka endured a civil war until 2009. Although the conflict was not globally discussed, the existing tensions are still evident. The civil war, beginning in 1983, began with the Tamil Tigers (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) uprising against the Sinhalese-dominated government, fighting for an independent state, Tamil Eelam. Despite the war 'ending' in 2009, Sri Lanka is still a country of relative division, with the majorty buddhist Sinhalese community and the minority Tamil Hindu community having stark political, soical and economic divisions.

I do not recommend the homestay we stayed :)
However, I met the kindest man named Sanjaya in Trincomalee who drove to Anuradhapura to give us a tour of his hometown, and took us to his house to eat lunch with his family. The kindness of Sri Lankans, in particular Tamil Sri Lankans is truly something very special.
We did a 7-hour tour of all the stupas and anciet monestaries:
